Why We Built More Than One Kind Of Post-Mount Mailbox

When we first started making modern mailboxes, it would have been easy to decide there was one “right” way to build a post-mount mailbox and leave it there – the problem is that homes don't work that way.

One homeowner checks the mail every afternoon and rarely receives anything bigger than a magazine. Another regularly finds padded envelopes and small packages waiting at the curb. Someone living along a busy road might care less about extra capacity than being able to retrieve their mail without stepping toward traffic, while another homeowner may have important documents sitting outside for hours before they get home and want a little more mail security.

Once we started paying attention to those differences, building a single post-mount mailbox and expecting it to work equally well for everyone stopped making much sense; that’s how our lineup grew. Not because we wanted different mailboxes simply to fill a collection page, but because different homes kept giving us different problems to solve.

The Malone became the foundation of our post-mount mailbox collection because it gave us something we could keep building around: a clean architectural shape, substantial steel construction, and enough customization to make the mailbox feel connected to the house behind it. It’s built in the USA from heavy-duty 14-gauge galvanized steel and finished with a weather-resistant powder coating, with optional 4-inch anodized aluminum magnetic house numbers that let homeowners change, straighten, or reposition their address without drilling into the mailbox.

From there, we wanted the choices to actually accomplish something.

The Malone comes in Black, White, Grey, Brown, Blue, Green, Red, and Corten Steel, which gives homeowners plenty of room to think beyond simply matching a mailbox to the trim. Black and White create crisp contrast, Grey keeps things softer and architectural, Brown works naturally with warmer exterior materials, while Blue and Green introduce color without feeling disconnected from the landscape around the home. Corten steel is the outlier in the best way: rather than relying on a traditional powder-coated finish, the raw steel develops a natural patina as it’s exposed to the elements, giving each mailbox a patina finish that becomes increasingly individual over time.

Size needed the same flexibility.

The Regular Malone measures 9.5 inches wide by 9 inches high by 21 inches deep and works well when everyday letters, magazines, and smaller deliveries make up most of what reaches the mailbox. The Large Malone, at 12 inches wide by 9 inches high by 21 inches deep, adds meaningful width for households dealing with bulkier mail, oversized envelopes, and small packages more often. We didn't want “large mailbox” to mean taking the same design and making every dimension unnecessarily bigger – keeping the depth and height familiar while adding width allowed us to increase usable capacity without turning the mailbox into something that felt oversized at the curb.

That distinction matters when choosing a post-mount mailbox. Capacity should be based on the mail that actually arrives at the house, not simply on the assumption that bigger is always better.

Once The Malone Custom Mailbox existed, we could also see where some homeowners didn't need everything it offered. Maybe the household gets fairly light mail. Maybe the biggest priority is replacing a dated mailbox with something cleaner and more modern. Maybe a homeowner wants Post & Porch materials and design without moving into a larger or more personalized mailbox. That became the reason for The Daily Post-Mount Mailbox.

The Daily uses powder-coated steel and keeps the modern silhouette of the rest of our collection, but its construction is intentionally simpler. It has a streamlined single-layer build rather than the additional outer shell used on The Malone, which gives us a way to offer a more accessible everyday mailbox without simply making a cheaper version of the same thing.

At 8.5 inches wide by 8 inches high by 20.75 inches deep, The Daily is well suited to letters, magazines, padded envelopes, and normal residential mail. For us, that makes it an important part of the post-mount mailbox lineup. Not every homeowner needs maximum capacity, a heavier architectural presence, or every customization available. Sometimes the better design decision is knowing what can be left out while keeping the parts that matter most.

Mailbox design isn't only about what happens inside the post box. Where a post-mount mailbox sits can change how it needs to work, especially when the curb is close to moving traffic. We developed the Dual Access Post-Mounted Mailbox so mail carriers can continue delivering from the street-facing front while homeowners retrieve their mail through a second door at the rear. Instead of walking around the mailbox or standing on the traffic side to open it, the homeowner can approach it from the house side.

It sounds like a relatively small change until the mailbox is installed on a busy road, along a narrow shoulder, beside frequent street parking, or somewhere a homeowner regularly checks the mail with a child or dog nearby. That’s where rear access stops being an extra feature and becomes the reason for choosing the mailbox in the first place. It also illustrates something we've learned while developing the Post & Porch Modern Mailbox collection: a better post-mount mailbox doesn't always need more material, more capacity, or more decorative options – sometimes making a product better means watching how somebody uses it for ten seconds every day and finding a way to make those ten seconds easier.

There was another need that couldn't be solved with size or access: what happens after the carrier closes the mailbox and walks away? For households where mail can sit outside for several hours, homeowners who routinely receive financial or personal documents, or anyone simply looking for additional protection at the curb, we wanted a locking post-mount mailbox that still looked like it belonged beside the rest of the house. That led to the Malone Post-Mounted Mailbox with Lock.

Instead of starting over with a mailbox that looked overtly utilitarian, we added a locking mechanism to the Malone Modern Mailbox design so homeowners could gain additional mail security while keeping the same streamlined architectural character. The locking mailbox model maintains the steel construction and powder-coated finish of The Malone while creating a protected interior for delivered mail. There’s an important practical distinction here, too.

A locking mailbox doesn't stop mail from being delivered; it helps control access after that delivery has been made. That makes it especially relevant when the concern isn't getting larger items into the mailbox, but reducing how easily someone other than the homeowner can retrieve what has already been placed inside. For us, mail security made more sense as its own post-mount mailbox consideration instead of a feature we assumed every household either needed or didn't need.
