Curb Appeal
What Is Curb Appeal?
Curb appeal is the overall first impression your home makes from the street.
It’s how your exterior looks and feels at a glance, from the mailbox and front porch to the landscaping and lighting. Agents often talk about curb appeal because small upgrades can make a home feel more welcoming and more valuable before anyone even walks in the door.
Strong curb appeal usually comes from a few key details working together:
→ A clean, modern mailbox that fits your home’s unique style
→ Easy-to-read house numbers, address planter, or an address plaque
→ Front porch planter pots with healthy, well-chosen plants
→ Simple, well-kept mailbox landscaping and edging
→ Good outdoor wall lighting so the entry feels safe and inviting
At Post & Porch, we think of curb appeal as your home’s handshake. A modern mailbox with post, clear address numbers, and a few tall front porch planters can turn an ordinary entrance into a polished, intentional welcome for guests, delivery drivers, and future buyers.
Why Does Curb Appeal Matter?
Curb appeal matters because it changes how people feel about your home before they ever touch the front door – and that feeling often shows up in real dollars.
Real estate research has found that homes with strong curb appeal can sell for anywhere from 7% to 14% more than similar homes with a tired exterior, depending on the market. In one study, simple exterior improvements such as fresh paint, updated fixtures, and landscaping ranked among the highest-ROI home upgrades, often recouping most of their cost at resale.
At Post & Porch, curb appeal isn’t about a complete home remodel. It’s about small, high-impact upgrades – like a modern mailbox, magnetic mailbox numbers, wall lighting, and a pair of tall front porch planters – that quietly increase your home’s value, make daily life smoother, and turn “just a house” into a place that feels thoughtfully finished from the street.
Modern Mailbox Info
Who Invented the Mailbox?
There isn’t a single inventor for every type of mailbox, but the post box that inspired today’s modern curbside mailbox was patented in 1891 by African American inventor Philip B. Downing. His “street letter box” made it easier and safer for people to send letters without having to go all the way to the post office, which, back then, saved US citizens lots of time.
Earlier designs for letter boxes and wall-mounted mailboxes existed, but Downing’s secure, weather-protected post box on legs is the closest ancestor to the modern post-mount mailbox you see in front of homes today, including powder-coated ones from brands like Post & Porch.
Can You Park in Front of a Mailbox?
Parking directly in front of a post-mounted mailbox or wall-mounted mailbox is strongly discouraged because it can block the carrier’s access, causing your mail to be skipped for the day. USPS expects the approach to your mailbox to be clear enough that the carrier can reach it safely and easily without having to weave around vehicles or other obstructions.
If you want reliable delivery to your modern mailbox, treat the space in front of it as a “no parking” zone during normal mail hours. But it’s also important to note that there's usually no single nationwide law that sets an exact distance for parking near a residential mailbox. Instead:
→ Many cities and HOAs have local ordinances that make it illegal to block a mailbox and blue post box, sometimes with a specific distance (for example, 8 feet on either side).
→ Even without a ticket, USPS can mark your mailbox as “blocked” and hold delivery.
Is It Illegal to Block a Mailbox?
It’s not usually a federal crime just to block a modern residential mailbox, but it can still cause some annoying problems. USPS regulations say customers are responsible for keeping the approach to their mailbox clear so carriers can deliver safely. If your mailbox is blocked by a car, trash can, animal, or snow, your carrier can skip delivery and try again later.
How High Should a Mailbox Be?
For curbside and post-mount mailboxes in the United States, USPS recommends installing them so the bottom of the mailbox or mail slot is 41 to 45 inches above the road surface. Other key USPS mailbox height and placement requirements for a curbside mailbox include:
→ Mailbox height: 41-45 inches from road surface to the bottom of the mailbox or mail entry.
→ Setback from curb: 6-8 inches from the face of the curb or road edge to the mailbox door.
→ Side of road: On the right-hand side of the road in the carrier’s direction on most routes.
Post & Porch post-mount and wall-mount mailboxes are designed to work with these USPS mailbox requirements, so you can focus on proper installation height and setback.
Can I Move My Mailbox?
You can move your mailbox, but you need to follow USPS mailbox requirements and local rules. In most cases, USPS asks you to contact your local post office before moving a curbside mailbox so they can confirm the new placement is safe and accessible for your carrier.
Consider:
→ Small adjustments on the same side of the road and general area are usually fine if the modern mailbox height and setback stay within USPS guidelines.
→ Bigger moves, such as relocating to a different side of the street or changing from a wall-mount mailbox to a post-mount mailbox, may require specific approval.
→ HOAs or historic districts may have additional rules about mailbox style, color, or location.
Can UPS Deliver to a Mailbox?
No. Only USPS is allowed to place items inside your residential mailbox. This rule is sometimes called the “mailbox monopoly,” and it means private carriers like UPS, FedEx, and most Amazon drivers can’t legally leave deliveries inside your mailbox, even if there is space.
UPS deliveries will typically be left on your porch, at your door, or in a separate package delivery box that you provide. Learn more about package delivery boxes in this FAQ →
Can FedEx Deliver to a Mailbox?
No. Unfortunately, FedEx, like UPS, is not allowed to place packages or envelopes directly into your residential mailbox. By federal law, your mailbox is reserved for postage-paid U.S. Mail delivered by USPS and accessed only by you and your mail carrier. If you receive frequent FedEx packages and want a more secure solution than leaving your boxes on the front porch, a dedicated package delivery box is an ultra-smart upgrade.
Can Amazon Deliver to a Mailbox?
Amazon leaving things in your mailbox depends on who is doing the final delivery:
→ If Amazon ships a package through USPS, your USPS mail carrier can place it in your mailbox or package delivery box if it fits and meets normal USPS mailbox requirements.
→ If the package is delivered by Amazon’s own drivers or another private carrier, they can’t legally put it in your mailbox and will usually leave it at your door or another safe area.
For frequent Amazon deliveries, a large locking mailbox or a modern package delivery box can help protect deliveries from the weather and porch pirates while keeping your curb appeal clean.
How to Paint a Mailbox?
You can paint your own post-mount or wall-mount mailbox, as long as you don’t interfere with delivery or cover required markings, such as the address numbers and magnetic mailbox flag. USPS focuses on function, visibility, and placement; mailbox color and finish are generally up to you. Post & Porch mailboxes come powder-coated in modern, UV-resistant finishes, so many modern homeowners skip painting entirely and simply wipe them down as needed.

How Much Does It Cost to Install a Mailbox?
Most modern homeowners can expect to spend $200-$500 total for a new post-mount mailbox and installation, though the range can run from about $50 on the low end to $1,000+ for premium, custom, or stone-column setups. The final cost depends on three factors: the type of mailbox you chose, the materials it’s made from, and whether you DIY or hire a pro.
Here’s a simple breakdown so you can ballpark your new mailbox project:
→ Basic mailbox + DIY install: A simple steel or plastic mailbox with a basic post can cost roughly $50-$150 total when you install it yourself using concrete mix and standard tools.
→ Modern or locking mailbox + DIY install: A heavier-gauge modern mailbox or locking mailbox, plus a quality mailbox post, usually falls in the $150-$400 range for materials.
→ Professional installation: Hiring a handyman, landscaper, or contractor to install a post-mount mailbox typically adds $150-$500 in labor, depending on your region, soil conditions, and whether the old post must be removed or a new concrete footing is needed.
→ High-end or custom builds: If you’re integrating your mailbox into a brick or stucco, or adding electrical for integrated lighting, costs can easily climb to $1,000+ for materials and labor.
How Much Does It Cost to Replace a Mailbox?
The cost to replace an old mailbox can range from budget-friendly to an investment, depending on whether you choose a basic mailbox or a premium mailbox with post. The Daily Base, for example, hits below the $100 mark, lasts for a long time, and still boosts curb appeal.

How to Install a Post-Mount Mailbox?
To install a post-mount mailbox meeting USPS mailbox requirements, follow these steps:
- Call before you dig: In the USA, dial 811 to locate utilities before you start digging.
- Set the mailbox post: Use a 4x4 mailbox post or a 2-inch steel or aluminum mailbox post. Bury it up to 24 inches deep in compacted soil or concrete to keep it stable.
- Position for height and setback: Adjust the mailbox post so the box will sit 41-45 inches above the road surface and 6-8 inches back from the curb or road edge.
- Attach the mounting plate and box: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for mounting brackets, screws, adapters, and any modern locking mailbox mechanisms.
- Label clearly: Add your house numbers (at least 1 inch tall) so carriers can see them.
Post & Porch modern post-mount mailboxes are expertly engineered to install easily (and quickly) on standard 4x4 mailbox posts while meeting all USPS mailbox requirements.
What Are the USPS Mailbox Requirements?
USPS mailbox requirements focus on safety, accessibility, and standardization to enable efficient delivery. For curbside and post-mount mailboxes, key USPS mailbox regulations are:
→ USPS-approved design: Curbside mailboxes sold as “USPS approved” or marked “Approved by the Postmaster General” meet size and construction standards.
→ Height: 41-45 inches from the road surface to the bottom of the mailbox or mail entry point.
→ Setback: 6-8 inches from the face of the curb or road edge to the mailbox door.
→ Location: On the right-hand side of the road in the carrier’s direction of travel.
→ Clear access: The approach to the mailbox must be clear of cars, snow, or landscaping.
→ Address markings: House numbers or mailbox numbers should be clearly visible.
Post & Porch modern mailboxes are designed with these USPS mailbox requirements in mind, so homeowners can focus on style, color, and curb appeal while staying USPS compliant.
Secure Package Delivery Box Info
When Do You Need a Package Delivery Box?
You may want to add a package delivery box or a large locking mailbox when:
→ You receive frequent online orders from Amazon, UPS, FedEx, and other private carriers.
→ Porch theft is a concern, and you want packages locked away instead of left in the open.
→ You want to protect deliveries from rain, snow, ice, wind, and even the harsh sun.
→ You simply want more streamlined, modern curb appeal instead of boxes piled everywhere.
A modern locking mailbox with parcel capacity, or a package delivery box, lets carriers place packages in a secure compartment out of reach of porch pirates while maintaining minimal, clean curb appeal. Post & Porch specializes in large, modern mailboxes that can handle everyday mail and all package sizes without sacrificing design – because that matters!
What Can You Do if Your Package Is Stolen?
If you suspect your package was stolen, act quickly and document everything.
First, confirm the delivery by checking the tracking number and any delivery photos or notes from the carrier. Then look around doors, side entrances, garage, and mailbox area in case the driver left it in a less obvious spot. If it’s still missing, check with neighbors to see if it was misdelivered or brought inside for safekeeping. Once you’re sure it’s gone, take these steps:
→ Contact the seller or retailer and report the missing package. Many offer replacement or refund options for stolen deliveries.
→ File a claim with the carrier (USPS, UPS, FedEx, Amazon) using your tracking number and order details.
→ Save any security footage from a doorbell camera or cameras and consider filing a police report, especially if theft is recurring.
In the future, improving your curb appeal can also enhance your security. A locking modern mailbox, a package delivery box, or a clearly visible, well-lit porch area makes it easier to protect deliveries. Post & Porch modern mailboxes and accessories are designed to look elevated from the street while providing a more secure landing spot for your packages and mail.
Front Porch Planter Pots Info
How Do You Plant Plants in a Planter Pot?
Planting plants inside a planter pot is one of the easiest ways to style a modern planter while keeping it low-maintenance. Instead of dumping loose soil straight into your decorative planter, you nest pre-potted plants or nursery plants inside and build around them.
Basic steps to planting in a front porch planter pot:
- Drainage: If your planter pot doesn’t have drainage holes, add a layer of gravel, foam blocks, or upside-down nursery pots at the bottom to keep roots out of standing water.
- Place your plant: Set your plastic grow pots, plant with a root system, or smaller planter pots inside the larger planter. Use filler underneath to bring them up to the right height.
- Fill the gaps: Tuck potting soil, moss, or decorative stones around the inner pots so everything looks seamless and full. This is also a curb appeal booster, which we love.
This method works beautifully with porch planters, tall modern planters, and planter sets when you want to switch plants with the seasons. We have a guide on which plants to plant here →
Outdoor Wall Lighting Info
How to Choose Outdoor Wall Lighting?
To choose outdoor wall lighting that actually works for your home, think about safety first, then style. Good outdoor wall lighting should make it easy to see steps, mailbox locks, and house numbers while still fitting your home’s curb appeal, architecture, and color palette.
Use this checklist when you choose modern outdoor wall lighting:
→ Scale: The outdoor wall lighting fixture should feel proportional to where it’s going, whether that’s your door or garage. As a rule, wall lighting is often 1/4 to 1/3 the height of what it flanks.
→ Wet rating: Look for outdoor wall lighting fixtures that are rated for damp or wet locations since they will face rain, humidity, wind, snow, sleet, and temperature swings.
→ Brightness + color: Choose bulbs that are bright enough to light the entry without harsh glare. A warm white (around 2700K-3000K) feels welcoming and flatters your home’s exterior.
→ Style & finish: Match or complement the outdoor wall lighting finishes on your modern mailbox, house numbers, and door hardware so everything feels intentional from the street.
→ Placement: Mount outdoor wall lighting fixtures high enough to spread light, but not so high that they cause harsh shadows. You don’t want to blind any drivers passing by at night.
Well-chosen wall lighting elevates curb appeal, especially when it coordinates with a modern mailbox, planter pots, package delivery boxes, a house number sign, and house numbers.
Fake Succulents Info
How to Make Faux Succulents Look Real?
Faux succulents can look surprisingly realistic if you treat them like real plants in a real front porch planter pot. The key is texture, mixing, and how you “plant” them. Try these tricks:
→ Use a real base: Skip the shiny plastic filler and set faux succulents into potting soil, sand, or small stones inside a modern planter pot so they look truly planted (AKA real).
→ Mix sizes and shapes: Combine different heights, rosette shapes, and trailing stems the way you would with real succulents to avoid that copy-and-paste look.
→ Bend and fluff: Gently bend stems and leaves so they are not all perfectly straight. A little asymmetry instantly feels more natural and realistic.
→ Choose believable colors: Stick with dusty greens, soft purples, and subtle gradients instead of neon shades of fake succulents.
→ Dust regularly: Wipe leaves and the planter rim with a soft cloth so dust doesn’t give away that they are fake succulents.
Magnetic Mailbox Numbers Info
Do Your Magnetic Mailbox Numbers Need to Stand Out?
Yes. Magnetic mailbox numbers should stand out clearly so your address is easy to read from the street, both for mail carriers and guests. High-contrast, easy-to-read address numbers are a small way to boost curb appeal and visibility. Learn more about contrasting them here →
